The “Not-so-Scarlet” Announcement Roundup

Okay, let’s see. First of all the Announcement yeserday was nearly Epic only. Us Scarleteers only got another Date. 30th of November. It’s okay with me, but it would have been better to tell he people upfront that this Date is Epic Only. At least there wouldn’t have been so much crying about how bad Red is…

So lets roundup. First Jim Posted the new now full featured specs of the Epic-X. Impressive 100fps at 5k. Not bad at all. After that Jim presented the four stages Plan how RED will release the Epic-X. The first three Steps. A Betatest one, an get Epic-X and not give away your R1 and the Trade your R1 for an Epic-X are for R1 Users only. After that there will be Epic S35 for all Non-Red Owners.

On this grafic linked up there Red also posted the order of releases Model-vise are:

Epic-X S35, Epic S35, Scarlet Fixed and Scarlet 2/3″, Scarlet S35, Epic FF35, Scarlet FF35, Epic645, Epic617. Doesn’t look too bad for us fixed Scarlet Fans…

There are also some Prices on it. Not to bad, not to cheap eather…

After that Jim focused a bit on the Scarlet System:

Scarlet 2/3″ Program. Given the recent new VDSLR releases, we have decided to up the capability of the Scarlet 2/3″ Fixed 8x and interchangeable models. Several new features are being added that will NOT impact the release schedule (anymore than it would have been otherwise) but it will mildly impact the pricing.

Okay, mildly impact the pricing. Sounds like the thing everyone said. They will cost you a lot more. But look at the changes announced:

1. Increased REDCODE data rates
2. New FLUT Color, Gamma and Sensitivity Science. Now same as EPIC.
3. More extensive modular system integration.
4. Interchangeable Lens mounts including focus and iris control of electronic RED, Canon and Nikon lenses, along with Zoom data (Scarlet 2/3″ Interchangeable)
5. “Touch Focus Tracking” with electronic lens mounts and RED touchscreen LCD’s (Scarlet 2/3″ Interchangeable and 8x Fixed)
5. Two independent microphone level channels, balanced input circuits, 48V Phantom Power, digitized at 24-bit 48KHz.
6. GigaBit Ethernet port
7. Scaled 1080P at 60fps

Yehaa. Love it. Now make the impact as mildly as it can get and I’m so on to this Idea. I mean, only the 60fps on 1080p rock. And the other stuff doesn’t sound that bad eather…

After that Bomb Jim went back to Epic Business. With an Example of the Epic-X MonsterGunner. Okay. Like it.

On Page two we got some Images, both real and rendered. I especially love this one as it shows that the Scarlet 2/3″ Sensot is that close to 16mm that it should be a cool looking Footage we get out of her:

Sensor-Size Comparison

On Page three we got even more Images.. That was it. End. Nothing more, nothing Less.

So what are my thoughts of the Announcement? Well, not so much about the Scarlet Fixed, and she’s the Reason why I started this blog. So I am a little bit disapointed. But in a good way. I love the Fact that RED starts to just throw out Info if they are more clear that they will stay fact. Something that often was used against them. As the new way is now used against them. Me personally likes the new Way of Red. They are as near to the Users as before the Change, but now handle it in a more business like way. The new Date? 30th of November? Okay. I’ll wait a Month more, no Problem. I kinda like the Announcement Dates. They are like Christmas. You get something awesome, most of the time are a bit disapointed that it’s not the one thing you wanted, but in the end you see how cool this stuff really is. So come on Red, bring it on.

The new Announcement Thread is there.

First real view of the fixed Scarlet Prototype?

Nice find by Peter Mosiman on Scarletuser.com

redscarletprototype

Seems like we have found the first Image of a Prototype Scarlet, as this is the Quote that goes with it in the original Text referred to in Peters Post.

BTW– the photo here is me with mark and Ted from Red with the full Hollywood camera and a prototype of the 3K handheld Scarlet version…

That means it could only be the Fixed or the Cinema with RPP.

Looks cool anyhow. But if it’s the fixed I really hope the Lens is not too big. Need to mount them Side-by-Side for stereoscopic Imagery, and if they are to big they are not as near together as the Eyes, which may result in a weird Look

Electronic Nikon and Canon Mounts

I didn’t find the Post burried under a 670 pages long Thread, but the Guys ad RedCentre just told us in there red centre #047 that Red is indeed putting at least electrics for the Aperture-Control into their Canon and Nikon Mounts. Maybe, as the System is also a Photo-System we even get full control over the Lenses?

The Long-time-not-seen Roundup

Hi, George here.

Was of filming in Sardegna with my GH1 and buried a little bit under work. And Man have things changed till my last Post. So I thought I’d roundup my Bookmarks to be up to date again and ready to post in time for the next big Things to come.

First of allJim Jannard did bomb us with a huge amount of new renders to wet our pants with this Gearporn Galore. If you din’thave a chance to see them take your time to crawl through the Pictures. It’s worth the Time.

Then ther is a wounderful Quote about the Mysterium-X Sensor by Steve Meizler, 1st Assistant Camera on Saving Private Ryan, Artificial Intelligence: AI, Ocean’s Twelve, War of the Worlds, Ché, The Informant, Social Network and several others.:

“To me, the new sensor is the biggest leap I’ve seen RED achieve. We rated the sensor at ISO 500 and did not see any noise in the blacks in low level lighting situations. The image is super clean.”

Later Jim did a recap on the new Philosphy of Red:

At RED, “everything changes”. In that spirit… even our philosophy has changed.

In a “unique to the industry way” we released the RED ONE as a beta camera and fixed things, enabled features and generally relied on our transparency and the patience of our customers to carry us through. We needed to do that because 3 years ago… we had no idea what we were doing. We were learning how to build a camera right before your very eyes.

Since most of our customers live here, I have tried to communicate as directly as possible so RED ONE owners were not left in the dark. We delivered our promises and even added some major surprises for free along the way. For the most part… it all worked out pretty well.

What is changing is that we are about to sell new cameras to many more new customers (that’s the plan anyway). We don’t believe that most of them will fight through a beta program and update their firmware on a weekly basis… or stand for “trust us… we are almost there”. We need to have a bulletproof program with a camera that works and features in place. When we initially announced our schedule, we did NOT have this philosophy in mind. It takes time to deliver a more robust and trouble-free system. That means a schedule hit. Pretty easy math.

We do have a plan for complete testing in this community, just different than the 1st time around. We will be transparent as always… that part of the philosophy has not changed.

For me that looks like a good way to go, keeping the Spirit we all love about RED and getting more professional while doing what they do.

Then Jim did drop another Bomb. A Stouffer Chart of the Mysterium-X Sensor. Don’t know what a Stouffer Chart is, means? Well, basically it says that the Mysterium-X can see more than 12 Stops of Light (12,2 as it looks). It will have less Noise in Low-Light and have a better “resolution” to show light to dark. If that makes sense for you.

And last but not least Jim mentioned that you can now upgrade your Red One to Epic-X without getting rid of your Red One. More about this will be available on the 30th of October. What? Did I forget to mention this? On October the 30th Red will have another huge announcement.

And till now they only got better end better with every announcement. Just don’t ditch the Fixed one…

Some more Quotes about that for the worried ones:

For those of you worried about big price increases… relax.

For those of you that need to know this program is still worth it… relax even more. It is better than our wildest dreams… we suspect yours as well.

I will clarify most of this Oct. 30th.

We appreciate your support.

Jim

Camerarentalz.com found a nice little Video featuring Ted from Red and the Scarlet. Unfortunately not the fixed one. Scarlet is targeted for Fall this Year, Epic in a few Month. No word about the fixed target-vice, but I hope for spring 2010… Now click the Link up there and take a look.

Last Weekend I had a day off. My Son was visiting his Grandma and me and my Wife took the Chance to hit the Theaters again after a Long time with only DVDs to view. And I wouldn’t tell you this here, if it wouldn’t have something to do with Red.

As you can see on Reds own Shot on Red-Site

this Movie was shot on Red Cams as we mentioned before.

And yeah. I’m a Fan of Che Guevara too, so I was very pleased to see that the Movie is really well done. I love the Look of it too. Don’t know if the Black and White Stuff was also filmed with a red but this part looks like 16mm Film Stock. The other stuff, as seen in the Teaser up there looks really pleasing to the Eyes. For me, as I don’t want to fully recap the Movie before I have seen Part two, it is a must see. Check it out as soon as possible. Steven deserves it. The Cinema I visited was packed with 12 People :-/ only.

What a damn red commercial break

No, I didn’t turn to the dark side and have put some Google-Ads on here. This is what I’m talking about:

redcinex1

Take a look at this funky Video

Looks like RedCineX (which got it’s own Category here, as it looks damn promising) is going to be an lightwight NLE combined with Lightroom on Stereoids for moving raw images. Combined with a Plug-In Architecture it could get the Red Users Tool of Choice. Maybe ad an easy share with AfterEffects/Whatever to it and make it working rock solid (with the Help of Red Rocket) and See you later FinalCut and PremierePro. The random Webstuff can be done easily with iMovie.

I really hope to get my hands on it asap. (which looks like August in Red terms). Maybe red Could sponsor me a red Rocket powered Computer if I promise to put some random how-to for this stuff online regularly… Jim?

Found this Video on Philip Blooms Site. It shows how AlexxHenry used the Red One to produce living Posters.

As promised, here is our experience with using the Red One Camera, chronicling our voyage beyond the still image. Looking forward to our next project featuring living art portraits. Stay tuned… After the video, take a peek at the links to see the final results.

We’re very excited about all the possibilities with converging photography and motion. Big thanks to everyone who helped make this happen. Especially Pam, DJ and Chad over at Hallmark who championed the idea. It’s not every client who is willing to take a risk with something new and they deserve recognition for this.
