Well, if you followed DigitalREDvolution for the last month you’ve seen I didn’t post that much. Here are some reasons for that I want to adress:

1. I started DigitalREDvolution years ago to show the Product (Red Scarlet, Epic wasn’t even announced) that would change the market for low- to no-Budget Filmmaking. Rebels with a great Idee, a lot of passion and no money to spend for fancy stuff. And a 3K Cam for 3k $ that shoots RAW would be a hell of a machine for that.
2. I’m tired of posting the same things over and over again. Renders, Dates, NewSpecs, Renders, Dates, NewSpecs… I know the Guys at RED are doing their work, and I love that they take their time to give us the ultimate cam.
3. RED. They state “Everything below 4k is VHS Quality” and yet they will produce a 3k Cam? Well, I have my troubles with that Idea. One of the 2. a) They will not, as it’s sub their standarts, then wy no word about that? b) They will, which makes the “4k is the new HD” an odd marketinggag from them. Both ways nothing for me, as it will not be the range I wanna talk about.
4. HDSLRs. Canon and Panasonic are providing the Stuff right now at an unbeatable price that RED thinks we, or the makers, should be ashamed of. Well, yeah. But you know, the best cam is the cam I have and can use.
5. HDSLRs. Two times? Well, yeah. The DOF we all fell in love with will be a no-go for the 3k Scarlet fixed. So basically it is just good for 3D, and there only with a mirror Rig that is way to bulky for Rebels.
6. I wanna write about stuff for Rebes on a Budget that wanna have a cool looking image (Hollywood/DOF) and RED is not the Company to serve their needs any more.

I love RED, their attitude and their way of handling business, and I will collect news of them and their Scarlet (S35 mainly) here. But I also will talk about Other Stuff. For people on a Budget. Like I am.

… with an epic prototype

Looks really nice. But please, please give us some Scarlet Facts now. And don’t keep telling that Epic was before Scarlet all the time. It was not. In Fact Scarlet was there before you even thought about the epic.
These Years of waiting doesn’t cut down the Competition at all. In Fact as Panasonic and Sony announced Camcorders based on their DSLR-Sized Chips they are growing in Numbers.

And more and more people tend to learn the benefits of using DSLRs for Filmmaking. Heck, even I am thinking of getting a Scarlet S35 (do we talk about that any more or is it not koscher nowadays?) instead of the Fixed as I lern to love the Pictures my GH1 produces. And as the Fixed with it oversized LEns will not even be useable for 3d as it looks some may go the GoPro 3D Route…

Anyhow, my Rant is over here’s the src of the Images. Hopefully I’m able to get some Informations about the lower priced Cams from Red out next.

There were some Sound issues, but none the less it’s an interesting outlook into the future of Red. Sadly No more about Scarlet in there, hopefully this will change at RedDay.

Usergenerated Content, from Users for Users sounds like a cool Concept.

The Scarlet, may it be the fixed or the exchangeable is a huge step forward. We know that. It takes a pro Tool into indies handsreach. But the HDSLRs like the Canon 5d, 7d, the Nikon D3s or the Panasonic GH1 have build a demand that Red needs to adress. Shallow Depth of Field.

I’m totally happy with my GH1, suited with a 35mm f1.8 Lens, which is, in 35mm terms a 70m with f3.6 due to the sensor Crop. But there are guys out there putting 1.2 Lenses to the 5d which is just that. No Crop. They even get, due to the Sensor, a shallower depth of field than 35mm Film.

And not only the filmmakers fall to the beauty of a shallow dof. The viewers also do. So will the Scarlet, fixed or 2/3 get the same Image? Probably not.

And the Filmmakers cry the same Thing over and over again. Put the Sensor into a Camcorder housing, make it pro and let me choose the Lenses. That’s what the Scarlet S35 is. But there are ne news at all about the S35.

Panasonic to the rescue

The AF100 is all that. Camcorder, Pro Features, Micro 4/3, Exchangeable Lenses. The only Bottleneck is the AVCHD Codec, which is a highly, but imho good compression. Could be worse, could be HDV…

The price is rumored at around 6 Grand, which is way to much. Then I’ll get a scarlet instead. First the fixed and later the S35 Body. Maybe Canon will follow? Or Nikon? The Sensor of a 5d or D3s in a Pro Camcorder would really shake the video Workld up. Even the guys that keep telling that a DSLR can not be used proper as a replacement for film. Well, ask the director of House M.D. about his thoughts. The Production Wold is changing. It’s a digital revolution. And RED needs to step up to put the D back in REdVOLUTION

Wow, you’d think you can hide under a stone (writing a screenplay) upfront to NAB and RED would wait to announce stuff till then. But no. There are tons of news and NAB just started.

There are some new specs also:

5K 2.37:1 is now 120 fps.
5K 16:9 is 96 fps.
5K 2:1 is 100 fps.

5K 2.37:1 is 5120 x 2160… which means you can crop the ends and get Quad HD from the same file… 3840 x 2160.

Red Station

The RED STATION modular reader system will begin shipping April 14th.

The RED MAG 2.5″, RED CF, and BASE STATION are priced at $250 per module and $250 per Base.

Each Module can be used independently or linked together as a system, using E-SATA, FIREWIRE 800/400 or USB2.0.

Looks like a bad ass backup Station to me.

2.5″ RED MAG accepts bare 2.5″ SSD and Spinning hard drives for offloading.

You can mix and match up to 3 modules per base station.

Proxy Module

RED is increasing the workflow flexibility on Epic and Scarlet with Proxy Modules… the first of which is an H.264 Module.

This module encodes a 1080P stream (high quality scale from full frame) and records to Compact Flash in a rear module. The module also offers secure password protected streaming over dedicated WiFi and ethernet to iPhones, iPads, laptops as well as broadcast to the internet. …

Great news from Avid.

Now you can directly access and edit RED files through AMA, without transcoding (images are scaled to HD frame size). Work directly with RED using the newly improved AMA. With Media Composer 5, AMA (Avid Media Access) has been completely reengineered, so you can work natively with more file-based media formats now and in the future. With the new and improved AMA, you can speed up RED workflows by directly accessing RED files (.R3D) in Media Composer without having to prepare them through MetaFuze (all footage is scaled to HD frame size). Plus, you have access to its full metadata and color management data too.
